Bill Houston: A Tribute

The sudden passing of councillor Bill Houston last year was a huge shock both to the community and to the Comhairle but especially devastating to his beloved children, Cameron, Christie and Niall.

Bill, who retired last year as Head of Leisure and Learning, had been elected in May as councillor for the composite ward of North Lochs and Uig. In his short time as councillor he showed himself to be a diligent and approachable representative of his constituents, a man of outstanding talent, thoroughly dedicated to his work and the welfare of others and totally committed to his ward, the Western Isles and the people of Scotland.

The death of his wife, Eleanor, nine years ago had a shattering impact on Bill and his three young children and he devoted himself fully to ensuring that his children were given a loving and stable upbringing whilst he still coped with a demanding and responsible role in the Comhairle.

In a deeply moving tribute at a packed funeral service in Crossbost Free Church, Rev Robert Sinclair portrayed the many positive and personal qualities which were hallmarks of his genuine concern for those in our communities.

We, in Manor Park, have many reasons to thank Bill Houston, in relation to the significant advice and assistance he gave to us as we sought to progress projects throughout our ward over the years.

Bill Houston was assuredly a highly respected man, an outstanding father and a friend to many. He will be sadly missed.

Our thoughts, sympathies and prayerful reflections are centred on Cameron, Christie and Niall, as they struggle to cope with this new experience in their tender years.

As they look back firstly on the loss of their mother, Eleanor, and now the departure of their father, Bill, we can barely imagine the pain and sadness which is now part of their lives. We, in the community, express our love to them and ask that they may be truly upheld by our saviour.
